Long before glass towers came to define the Chicago skyline, the bridge houses along the Chicago River quietly watched over the city. Built for purpose rather than spectacle, they remain steady landmarks while the skyline continues to reinvent itself around them.
 
The Watch at State is an original ink and watercolor inspired by the historic State Street Bridge House. Rather than placing the Marina City towers at center stage, I wanted this painting to soften the towers into the background, where they become part of the atmosphere of an autumn afternoon along the river.
 
Fine ink gives permanence to the bridge house and its architectural character, while watercolor washes suggest the city beyond—changing, reflective, and always in motion.
 
The result is less a portrait of Chicago’s skyline than a reflection on what endures within it.
 
Presented in a warm white conservation mat and heritage oak wood frame, this one-of-a-kind original is part of the Stoney Bend Originals collection.
