Art Inspired by Places that Matter
My name is Scott Norman, and I'm the artist behind Stoney Bend. I create original ink and watercolor artwork inspired by places with history, character, and stories worth remembering.
Much of my work is influenced by the imagination of Shel Silverstein, and the discovery of small details that make a place worth remembering. While I'm often inspired by the Michigan places that feel like home, curiosity takes me beyond the Great Lakes.
The Approach
Every Stoney Bend piece begins with a place worth noticing.
Discover • Paint • Write
Three simple ideas guide the work. Discover what makes a place interesting. Interpret its character through ink and watercolor. Share the stories, history, and observations that make a place meaningful.
The process is intentionally unhurried. I'm less interested in documenting every detail than in finding unique qualities that makesa place feel like itself.
Why Place Matters
Homes, landmarks, and familiar settings carry meaning beyond their physical form. They hold memories, history, and connections. Over time, these places become part of our own stories and sense of belonging.
Some places are meaningful because we've known them all our lives. Other times, it's the places that have stood the test of time — or may have quietly disappeared with it. Ultimately, this is what draws me to place. The feeling that there's something worth discovering, remembering, or sharing.
About the Work
Stoney Bend is rooted in slowing down, paying attention, and honoring place that hold lasting meaning. Each piece is drawn and painted by hand with careful attention to light, architecture, and setting. My goal is to capture not just how a place looks, but how something about how it feels.
I choose restrained colors and simple compositions to allow certain details to stand out while others may disappear. Sometimes a few carefully placed lines are enough. Other times, watercolor may create the atmosphere. The final intention is to create artwork that captures and honors the character and memory of a place.
A Personal Note
Stoney Bend began as a way to use artwork to capture the stories behind places in our lives. Over time, it has become something more --- an opportunity to explore places, history, memory, and small discoveries that capture our imagination.
As the artwork evolves, the heart of Stoney Bend remains the same. Curiosity, connection and belief that meaningful art doesn't need to be loud to last.
I'm grateful for everyone who connects with the work, shares a story about a meaningful place, or simply follows along to see where Stoney Bend goes next.
