High above the streets of Detroit, the aviation beacon atop the historic Penobscot Building remains one of the city’s quieter architectural landmarks.
Often overlooked from street level, the beacon crowns one of Detroit’s great Art Deco buildings. Its delicate steel spire and stepped architectural details reflect an era when even the highest, least visible parts of a building were designed with intention.
I painted The Beacon in a minimalist way to highlight this often overlooked detail. Fine ink lines and restrained watercolor washes isolate the structure against open space, allowing its distinctive form and craftsmanship to stand on their own.
Presented in a warm white matting and Heritage Oak wood frame, The Beacon is a one-of-a-kind work from the Stoney Bend Originals collection.
